Intro to Research paper

David Napier Prof. JoAnne Harris 10/30/2020          The good the bad and the ugly. A classic western film starring Clint Eastwood tells the story of three gunslingers duking it out for gold during a chaotic and vicious war. Many people love that movie, both for Clint Eastwood and for its depiction of pure chaos in a lawless setting. People also hate social media for the same reasons. Not for Clint Eastwood, but for the brutal users gunslinging hateful words at each other, abusing the privilege of a public forum by hiding behind their anonymous screen names. It's driven both politician and pedestrian mad. The pedestrian cries out for change and the politician promises that change will come, however both of them use the platform to promote business and talk to friends, so they do nothing instead; some even going as far as defunding programs of those harmed on the online forums. Meanwhile many lives both young and old are negatively effected, and some unfortunately taken, in the chao

Making a Claim

Image
David Napier Oct. 24th, 2020 Prof. JoAnne Harris      Topic: Social Media      Research question: Should we change the way we as a society manage social media?      Claim: We need to change the irresponsible way we manage social media.      Why I am interested:      I express an interest in this topic because it's an issue that effects all of us. Social media has an impact on our culture, businesses, education, government, and ultimately society as a whole. It's a communication tool used in all aspects of our life. More importantly, it will continue to effect our society as we continue to grow. On a more personal note this topic briefly covers mental health, which is a persistent on going battle in my life. I believe that it is being misrepresented in news and media of the modern age when the topic is discussed.     My Audience: People my age (16-22), those with the same interest, those who can relate to the issue, and those who will have to live with the decisions we will m

The Effects of Music

Image
David Napier 10/5/2020 Joanne Harris           The effects music can have on a person are numerous. An example I've heard personally is its therapeutic effects on those with Alzheimers. The old woman had lost nearly all of her memory, she couldn't even recognize her own daughter, but she could remember all the church songs from when she was little. This story is backed up by science. That's not all. Music can also reduce stress, improve healing, and can be an excellent method of communication and self expression. A high cortex volume in a person's brain means they have a lot of potential to change. They say the cortex volume of the brain is highest in musicians. Playing For Change is the embodiment of this fact.         In the video, “Stand By Me|Playing For Change|Song Around the World” by Playing For Change , I immediately took notice of the fact that all of the performers in the video are street performers.   I started to think of how that is a significant detail. The oldest sport: Boxing or Running?

Image
Humanity has been competing with each other's physical prowess for what feels like the dawn of our species. Many of these sports require not just peak physical condition to compete but a sharp mind as well. However there is little to no debate that Running and boxing are the oldest sports to ever exist. Martial arts Has a long history spanning all the way back to the roman empire, and even longer before that. However the same can be said about running. Humanity has always been running, since the earliest stage of our evolution if we didn't run from predators we may not be here today.       The question is; which one is older? I don't think it's that simple, I think the question is when was it first seen as a sport? I say this because, as I said before, humanity has been doing both since our  beginning. Referencing the earliest stages of our evolution again when we first stood upright, lesser dominant males would fight the pack leader for the right to mate. It wasn

Is Edison a Fraud?

Image
Thomas Edison is a fraud?      Thomas Edison is a rather controversial person to speak about. Did he or did he not actually invent the lightbulb? Everyone knows that he has taken credit for this amazing feat, but, does he truly deserve this glory?      I am against this glamorized depiction of Mr.Edison. I refuse to fall into line with the cheaply made facade that he has created right in front of our very eyes.       Thomas Edison “invented” the lightbulb in 1879 as the following credible sources claim. He came up with the idea when he realized there was a flaw with Joseph Swans design, the filament.       Now we have the anterior side to discuss. Joseph Swan, a scientist. He is who many people, including me, claim really created the lightbulb. Swan produced the earliest electric lightbulb.       Now this is the million dollar question, why did Edison get all of this hype and glory, when poor Mr.Swan gets absolutely nothing? Swan is indeed the one who created the actual physical shel

College is Bulls***!!

Image
" College is a scam," said my fiance. "You're getting scammed, the teacher is getting scammed, you're all getting scammed. It's no wonder people aren't going."  It's the professional obligation of colleges to report graduation rates. Normally nobody would care except the number's being reported are kinda embarrassing. They range from 56% to 2.5%. Thats well over half to damn near the entire class thats dropped out. So why? Why are people deciding to not stay in college?  Completing college is obviously expensive, so in order to cut the cost, students strive to graduate in 4 y ears. " To be enrolled full-time, students must take 12 credits a semester. To graduate in four years, students must take and pass at least 15 credits a semester," says  Lynn O'sha ughnessy in her article. So by that logic, students have to work more than what is already required per semester to graduate on time? Now it may not seem like much but students h
